Parents both work and have no time to shop and cook, and even sit down to eat. In bucolic Tacloban, small-time neighborhood eateries and even ambulant vendors sell food "to go." Seven days a week. The daily menu is repetitive. Cooking your own food, it is said, is more expensive. Yet I have always cooked for my family, at the worst of times because I know we would eat better, and eat more with home-cooked food. Food is very important. To me it is a gathering place for the family and through feeding one passes on values about caring in the simplest and the most direct way, respect for the most fundamental of human processes, and a sense of sanctity of life. I like a person who loves food and enjoys it with gratitude and grace. I would like that value to be passed on to people because, yes, it does make us more human.Merlie M.
